Fire Prevention |
|
The
Lawrenceburg Fire Department offers a complete
Fire Prevention Program as a community service.
Firefighters bring fire trucks and equipment to
pre-schools and elementary schools throughout
Lawrence County. The department also meets with
local senior citizens' groups to emphasize use of
smoke detectors and other fire safety tips.
Meet
Sparky!
Sparky is the fire prevention mascot of the
Lawrenceburg Fire Department. A remote control
Dalmatian in a bright red miniature fire truck,
Sparky helps teach children about fire safety.
Sparky can blink his eyes, talk, move his head,
drive his fire truck around, flash the lights and
run the siren, and even spray water!
Chief Don Kelley says, "We teach students to avoid
dangerous situations; for example, by not playing
with matches. Then we tell them what to do if
there is smoke or fire present - to find an adult,
crawl out of a smoky room, stop, drop, and roll,
and go to the family meeting place.
"We also want children to know that fire fighters
are there to help them. Many youngsters are afraid
when they see a fireman in all his bulky gear,
wearing a mask and helmet. They want to run and
hide. But we teach them that the fireman's gear
helps him carry them to safety out of a smoky or
burning house. Sparky and his red fire truck
reinforce this training. With a little help from a
fire fighter, he can ask the kids questions to
make sure they understand what to do. Plus, he's
just a whole lot of fun, and schoolchildren can't
wait to see what he'll do next! This makes the
fire safety program exciting and keeps their
interest."
Any school or community club across Lawrence
County can sign up for a visit from Sparky.

CPR Training |
The
Lawrenceburg Fire Department provides CPR training
using Red Cro ss curriculum. All City firefighters
are EMT (Emergency Medical Training) Certified.
This enables them to provide initial emergency
medical care at the scene of a fire or accident.
Many also have training and certification to teach
First Aid/CPR courses.
Participants in these courses learn how to give
CPR in case a victim's heart or breathing stops.
The Fire Department has equipment, including
dummies, which allows hands-on instruction.
Students also learn how to control bleeding and
apply bandages, plus proper handling of patients.

Community Pride |
She
rolled into Lawrenceburg on September 25, 1928.
Resplendent in a coat of cherry red with gold leaf
accents, she was the hottest thing that this town
had ever seen.
She
was Lawrenceburg's first new fire engine, helping
City fire fighters save many a life and many a
home. She is fondly known as Old Huldie. Years of
service have taken their toll, and Old Huldie is
now receiving a major facelift.
Fire
fighters and the community have raised funds to
have Old Huldie restored - engine work, sanding &
painting, the works - to her original mint
condition. Lawrenceburg Fire Chief Don Kelley
says, "Old Huldie is a symbol of pride for our
community. We cherish our heritage and revere our
old-time fire fighters as local heroes. What
better way to honor them than to restore Old
Huldie?"
The
vintage fire engine will be housed at Fire Station
No. 2 in Lawrenceburg. She will make appearances
in local parades and be the official carrier of
Santa Claus in the annual Christmas Parade. |
