D.A.R.E. Program |
|
D.A.R. E.
means Drug Abuse Resistance Education, and the
Lawrenceburg Police Department is proud to
support this highly acclaimed program. The goal
of the program is to give our children the
skills they need to avoid involvement in drugs,
gangs, and violence.
The D.A.R.E. Program requires officers to have 80
hours of special training in child development,
classroom management, teaching techniques, and
communication skills. Officers work closely with
school administrators, teachers, and the
children at elementary schools - spending time
in the classrooms, on the playground, in the
cafeteria, and at school events. This
relationship is key to the success of the
program, as the children can freely ask
questions and discuss situations that they face
on a daily basis. Sixth graders who complete the
D.A.R.E. program have a graduation ceremony and
receive a special certificate.
For more information about the Lawrenceburg Police
Department's D.A.R.E. program, please contact
Chief Terry Shay at 762-2276,
or visit the national D.A.R.E. website at
www.dare.com.

K-9 Unit |
The Lawrenceburg Police Department has a narcotic
detection dog named
Chad
- a black Labrador Retriever. K-9 teams must be
certified by a panel of judges in order to work
the streets and be reliable in court. The judges
not only certify the teams but also keep score
of each performance. The top-scoring teams are
awarded trophies and medallions.
The certification and field trials for Narcotic
Detection Dogs are divided into two categories:
Indoor Hides (rooms) and Outdoor Hides
(vehicles). The Indoor Hides consist of three
rooms (approx. 200 sq. ft. each), two narcotic
hides, and a time limit of ten minutes. Each
team can score a maximum of 100 points. The
Outdoor Hides consist of five vehicles, two
narcotic hides, and a time limit of ten minutes.
Again, each team can score a maximum of 100
points. The two scores are then combined to
obtain the total team score.
The Lawrenceburg K-9 team has historically
scored well in the trials and is a great asset
to the Police Department. |

Gun Safety |
The
Lawrenceburg Police Department is pleased to
provide gun safety locks at no charge, with the
help of Project ChildSafe. These devices will help
prevent gun accidents by disabling the weapon.
Remember, only people can prevent gun accidents;
keep your family safe by keeping your guns safe.
You may pick up gun safety locks from the Police
Department at 233 W. Gaines Street in Lawrenceburg
between the hours of 8:00 A.M. and 4:00 P.M.,
Monday through Friday.
Gun
Safety Tips:
-
Be sure you know how your firearm operates.
-
Always keep a gun pointed in a safe direction.
-
Never assume that a firearm is unloaded.
-
Always keep your finger off the trigger, even
when handling an unloaded gun.
-
Unloaded firearms should be stored in a locked
cabinet, safe, gun vault, or storage case.
-
Unloaded firearms can be secured with a gun
locking device.
-
Store ammunition in a locked location separate
from firearms.
-
Always re-check firearms carefully to confirm
that they are unloaded when you remove them from
storage.
Tell
Your Children:
-
Don't go looking for guns in your house or a
friend's house. Don't let other kids look for
guns in your house.
-
If you find a gun in your house - or anywhere
else - STOP! Leave it alone. Don't touch it.
Don't let anyone else touch it. Leave the area
and be sure to tell an adult at once.
-
Even if a gun looks like a toy, don't touch it.
Some real guns may look like toy guns, so don't
take a chance. Leave the area and immediately
tell an adult.
Remember...if you find a
gun, don't pick it up. Just leave it alone, and go
tell an adult right away!

#33 offers a hand gun carry permit course.

* NEVER place an infant

** Booster seats
require both lap
and shoulder belts! |
- Seats must meet
Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards and be used according to
child safety restraint system and vehicle manufacturer's
instructions.
-
Any
child who has special needs and cannot be safely transported in a
conventional child restraint requires a doctor's prescription for a
specially modified seat.
- Proper occupant
protection for children under age 16 is the responsibility of the
parent, if present. Otherwise the driver is accountable for these
passengers.
|
Why Booster Seats?
Young children who have outgrown their car seats are still too small
for an adult lap and shoulder belt. When these young children wear
adult seat belts they can suffer serious injuries to the head, neck,
spinal cord, and abdomen. All it takes is a BOOST to put them in the
proper position for the adult lap/shoulder belt to protect them! |
|
Booster Seat 5-Step Test
|
-
Does the child sit all the way back against the
auto seat?
-
Do the child's knees bend comfortably at the
edge of the auto seat?
-
Does the belt cross the shoulder between the
neck and arm?
-
Is the lap belt as low as possible, touching the
thighs?
-
Can the child stay seated like this for the
whole trip?
|
| If you answered NO to any of these questions,
your child needs a booster seat to ride safely in the car. |
